SNEC PV POWER EXPO 2010

Martin Green Nominated as the “Permanent Honorary Chairman” for SNEC PV POWER EXPO

On the evening of May 8, on the boat of the Huangpu River Cruise & Banquet sponsored by Suntech, Prof. Martin Green took over the appointment letter of the “Permanent Honorary President” from Mr. Xiaodong Chen, the Director of the Group Office of Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd., who acted as the representative of Dr. Zhengrong Shi, the Chairman and CEO of Suntech.

Nearly 400 scientists and entrepreneurs from the PV industry around the world witnessed this historical moment. With the support of world-class experts such as Prof. Martin Green, it is believed that SNEC PV POWER EXPO will be better and more outstanding in future!

SNEC Runs Well, Which Fully Reflects the Fast Development of Global PV Industry

Since his first visit to China in the 1980s, Prof. Martin Green has been to China for many times, but he clearly remembers that this stay in Shanghai is the longest.

Until the noon of May 8, when the reporter had an interview with him, he and his wife, Mrs. Judy Green, had been stayed in China for 9 days since the entry on April 30. He stayed in Shanghai most of the time during these 9 days, except for one trip to Wuxi to participate in a private activity of his student, Dr. Zhengrong Shi, and the other trip to Beijing for a luncheon of the Australian Embassy in China. The amazing World Expo 2010 and the unprecedented SNEC (2010) PV POWER EXPO both attracted his special attention.

When being asked about the impression of the two global shows, not only did he sigh with emotion, but he also recalled the development footprint of the PV industry in China, to which he had paid close attention these years:

Ten years ago, when he was invited to make a keynote speech at a photovoltaic seminar held in the Solar Energy Institute of Jiaotong University, he mentioned that China has good conditions for the development of photovoltaic industry. His interpreter at that time was none other than his student, Dr. Zhengrong Shi. In fact, the PV industry hadn’t been formed yet at that time in the world. And there were only a few plants in Germany and Japan in operation. When Dr. Shi established Suntech in 2002, its scale was not as large as that of today, and it didn’t have so many employees as well as so strong social influence as it does today. But now, Suntech has become one of the world’s largest manufacturers of PV modules, and China's PV industry has also become the largest in the world, with a value chain ranging from silicon materials to application products, from crystalline silicon to non-crystalline silicon, from PV modules to machines; the output and the number of employees account for over 40% of the world PV market respectively!

With special reference to the SNEC PV Power Expo, Prof. Green said, “One drop of water can reflect the brilliance of the sun, while the SNEC exhibition is just the epitome and emblem of the rapid development of the photovoltaic industry in China and even the world.”

He also pointed out that, “Of course, the SNEC exhibition is successful, also because it’s held in Shanghai -- just have a look at the splendid and wonderful opening ceremony of the World Expo 2010, and then you can have the image.”

Prof. Green also said, “The success of the exhibition also contributes to the organizers’ hard work and wisdom. As we all know, for whatever exhibition, the organizers would all make great efforts, but not every exhibition could be a successful one. However, the SNEC exhibition, as well as the conference -- SNEC International Photovoltaic Power Generation Conference, is in a great success due to the joint efforts of the organizers -- the 15 international organizations including Shanghai New Energy Industry Association (SNEIA) and Chinese Renewable Energy Society (CRES). At this time, Mr. Martin received a phone call, and his wife added, “I’m also very surprised. This exhibition is really the largest and the most attractive PV show I’ve ever seen.”

When being asked for any suggestions for the future SNEC events, Prof. Green frankly expressed that even though the exhibition area had been greatly enlarged, but it seemed that the booths of many companies were still small, and the duration of the exhibition was also too short. He pointed out that “since so many exhibitors would like to participate in the exhibition, then in addition to enlarging the exhibition space, the host could also consider to properly prolong the exhibition duration.”

Enthusiasm for the SNEC PV Power Conference Is Beyond Imagination; It Is Wished to Be Larger Next Year

When it came to the topic about SNEC PV Power Conference, reporter asked Prof. Green for his opinions on the conference. He said, “The conference is also very successful. It has attracted lots of experts and entrepreneurs. It is also out of expectation that a professional and academic forum could receive such enthusiasm beyond imagination. If there is any defect, then it must be that the content of the forum is too rich that many scholars may regret because they cannot attend all of these sessions.”

Reporter said, “Someone saw that when you attended the Grid-Connection and System Integration Forum this morning, you just stood there for some time.”

Prof. Green responded with a nod, “That’s true, because that forum is very good. Several speeches are rather attractive. But many people have to stand there, and even outside the door, due to the limited space in the room. This not only reflects the popularity of the conference, but also shows that the organizer might not have enough foresight. I sincerely hope that every session of the SNEC PV Power Conference next year will have a larger audience -- of course, I also hope the topics of the conference next year could be relatively concentrated, so that all attendees can participate in it more comfortably and will not have any regrets.”

Pleased to be the “Permanent Honorary President” and contribute to the SNEC (2010) PV POWER EXPO

During the interview, Mrs. Yue Mi, the Secretary-General of the Organizing Committee of SNEC (2010) PV POWER EXPO and the Executive Vice Chairman of SNEIA, invited Prof. Green to come to Shanghai for future SNEC events very year, and to be the “Permanent Honorary Chairman”. Prof. Green discussed with his wife for a short time and asked, “Do I need to do a lot of work? I am worried that I would be too busy.” Mrs. Mi said, “You don’t need to do specific work. You only need to help come up with some ideas to make SNEC (2010) PV POWER EXPO better!” After hearing this, Prof. Green readily replied, “OK!”

On that evening, on the boat of the Huangpu River Cruise & Banquet sponsored by Suntech, Prof. Martin Green took over the appointment letter of the “Permanent Honorary President” from Mr. Xiaodong Chen, the Director of the Group Office of Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd., who is the representative of Dr. Zhengrong Shi, the Chairman and CEO of Suntech.
